Drawing with light

The word photography literally translates to “writing with light", making this the perfect assignment to embrace the definition of photography. Ideally, you would use a tripod for this assignment, but any stable surface that you can set your camera on will work. I would like you to experiment and try a wide variety of settings and light sources, but to quickly grasp the concept you can set up in a dark room (does not need to pitch black). If you have a subject or object you would like to be in focus, make sure they are sharp before you turn the light off. To begin,  try setting your camera at F/8 for 4 seconds (next try other shutter speeds 2 seconds, 6, seconds, 10 seconds, etc). With this assignment, it is less important that you do a meter reading. You can check your light meter, but most likely to get the results you want, you will be overexposing the image. Use a flash light to make a drawing or write your name. After you achieve the results you want, get creative and experiment. Change your light source (sparklers, lighter, flashlights, glow sticks, etc) and try various subjects and settings. To see some examples of work others have done, type in "drawing with light" in google image search.

The following will be due on Monday:
*Assignment # 3 should be shot and edited in Bridge (assign star ratings to your images). This includes your drawing with light images.

*Read pages 61-115 in your text, jot down notes and questions that come up for you while reading.

*Look at the images posted on the class blog and make a few comments.

Look forward to seeing your work on Monday!

  1. If you are doing the drawing with light yourself, you will need to use the timer on your camera. I encourage you to try this and in additional images involve a few friend or family members.
